Thank you Planet Earth!

I’ve decided to utilize the day’s beauty and sounds of nature as my muse. And, a muse it is. The sounds of nature are gently seeping into my ear drums as I get settled. As I sit and put my feet up I began to look around in observance of Earth Day.

From the harmonizing sounds of birds singing and chirping, the clear blue sky, the variations of green and deep red leaves faintly moving back and forth, the choir of dogs barking innumerable voices of soprano, alto, tenor and bass, I am reminded of how beautiful our surroundings  truly are.

Earth day represents an idea to protect our environment on a national level. It came about as a mere notion in 1970 by Wisconsin US Senator, Gaylord Nelson. According to, the concept of earth day came from, “witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda.”  Twenty million Americans rallied nationwide on April 22, 1970 for a “healthy, sustainable environment”. Gaylord recalled this about Earth Day, “It was a gamble…but it worked.”

Today we continue the fight to preserve a healthy and sustainable environment by choosing to use less water, eat healthier plant based foods, and make better choices with the chemicals that we use in our homes and on our skin.

So, in observance of earth day, we’ll take a quick look at some skin care ingredients that represent air, water, and earth:

AIR- Oxygen (CoEnzyme Q10)- Co-Enzyme Q10 is an all-natural trans isomer derived from yeast fermentation. This ingredient stabilizes cell membranes and brings oxygen to the cells to maintain cell function, promoting healthy cell renewal. Co-Enzyme Q10 is considered an ideal antioxidant that protects the cells from oxidation.

WATER- Moisture (Hyaluronic Acid Filling Spheres)- Hyaluronic Filling Spheres  are a composition of high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acids incorporated in the oily phase of cosmetic formulations in a dehydrated form to better penetrate the skin. Hyaluronic acid holds 1,000 times its weight in water and this formulation of dehydrated microspheres help to rapidly penetrate the skin to fill lines and wrinkles, create volume and prevent trans-epidermal water loss.

EARTH- dirt, plants, vegetation (plant extracts)- Plant extracts such as: Barley, green tea leaf extract, apple, kiwi, Irish moss, comfrey, fern tree, cucumber, Echinacea, emblica, willow herb, and Japanese honeysuckle extracts are very commonly used throughout our industry. These natural sources provide a variation of skin benefits that are soothing, calming, healing, brightening, antioxidant, brightening, anti-aging, anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Mr. Nelson’s mere idea in 1970 turned into a movement that permeated many industries and it still continues. Although, there is still work to be done, we have come so far. Let’s continue to make better choices in all areas of our lives!
